Something New is in the Air

Samhain is a Celtic, pagan holiday that has evolved into what we now call Halloween. Samhain is an Irish word meaning “summer’s end” and in pagan times, was considered their new year. It was celebrated with a 3-day festival with community bonfires, rituals, communing with the dead, and taking a break. Samhain also celebrates the ending of the light half of the year and the entering into the cold half of the year.

During Samhain, it is believed that the veil is the thinnest between this world and the spirit world so celebrations honoring the dead were held. Due to the Celtics strong sense of superstition, there was also fear of being “snatched” by a deceased relative and taken to the spirit world so many people wore costumes to disguise themselves. This may be where current day Halloween includes the wearing of costumes and dressing up.

Rituals include taking a nature walk, spending time in nature, and creating meals using fruits and vegetables and game meat if available.

The new year was celebrated as endings and new beginnings. Maybe we can celebrate this Halloween by honoring the past, remembering our deceased loved ones, and setting intentions for the new year. Reviewing the past year, any intentions or goals that we set for ourself, and deciding where we are in the process. Ask yourself- what is next for me? Do I want to complete this intention or goal? If the answer is yes, what are the action steps to take? If no, do I want to create a new intention or goal?

“Halloween is a day in which some people choose to wear a mask… while others finally feel safe to take theirs off.” - Steve Maraboli

Halloween is a time for us to reflect on our life, our choices, our dreams and goals. We sometimes wear costumes including a mask which can keep us from sharing who we are with the world. These masks may make us feel safe even though in reality, we are keeping ourselves from healing and creating the life we envision for ourselves. Masks show the world something other than the truth. We often use these masks to disguise ourselves, I wonder if out of fear, anxiety, insecurity, or some other reason that we may not even consciously understand. Now is the time, it’s time to step into the present moment, take action, and become the person you are called to be…a Divine expression of Spirit unfolding as you!
